Jakob (Jacob) Riesser (born November 17, 1853 in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen ; † May 6, 1932 in Berlin ) was a German lawyer and politician ( DVP ).

Life and work

Riesser, son of Raphael Riesser, was of Jewish descent and attended the municipal high school in Frankfurt. After graduating from high school, he studied law in Heidelberg , Leipzig and Göttingen , where he received his Dr. jur. received his doctorate . In the same year he passed the first state examination in law at the Higher Regional Court of Celle . In 1879 the second state examination followed in Berlin. In 1880 he established himself as a lawyer in Frankfurt am Main . In 1888 he became director of the bank for trade and industry (Darmstädter Bank) , which had its seat in Berlin . In 1893 he joined the Berlin Society of Friends . In 1900 he was involved in the founding of the Central Association of the German Banking and Banking Industry . In 1905 he was appointed honorary professor for commercial law at Berlin University .

In 1909 Riesser set up the Hansabund for trade, commerce and industry to defend the economic interests of the bourgeoisie against the conservative agrarians. He remained chairman of the federal government until 1920. He was also a co-founder of the civil service insurance association of the German banking and banking industry . He was Vice President of the Berlin Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Court of Honor of the Berlin Stock Exchange. He was also a member of the Central European Business Association and was Vice President of the Association of Berlin Merchants and Industrialists as well as the Berlin Legal Society and the German Lawyers' Association .

Riesser was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Frankfurt am Main on March 10, 1926 . Jakob Riesser was the nephew of Gabriel Riesser , who was Vice President of the Frankfurt National Assembly . On July 4, 1880, he married Emilie Edinger, the daughter of the businessman, textile manufacturer and Hessian member of the state parliament, Marcus Edinger, and Julie, née Hochstaedter. The connection resulted in three children, daughter Gabriele and sons Hans Eduard Riesser , diplomat, and Otto Riesser , pharmacologist.

Riesser was buried in the Wilmersdorf cemetery.

Political party

During the German Empire, Riesser was a member of the National Liberal Party , of which he had been a member since 1903. In 1918 he participated in the founding of the DVP .

MP

Riesser was a member of the Reichstag of the German Empire from June 1916 to 1918, after he won a by-election in the Heidelberg constituency . He was a member of the Weimar National Assembly in 1919/20 and was a member of the Reichstag until 1928. From May 11, 1921 to 1928 he was Vice President of the Reichstag.
