from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jacques Schedler (born July 27, 1927 in Bürglen near Weinfelden ; † April 13, 1989 in Frauenfeld ) was a Swiss painter , draftsman and graphic artist who lived and worked mainly in Warth near Frauenfeld since 1961 .

Life

Jacques Schedler was born on July 27, 1927 in Bürglen near Weinfelden as the youngest child of the family. The father lost his job at the worsted spinning mill in Schaffhausen due to his left-wing political involvement in the Grand Council of the Canton of Thurgau . His subsequent job search turned out to be difficult; the mother made ends meet financially with tailoring at home.

Jacques Schedler completed his apprenticeship as a flat painter , although he actually wanted to become an artist or an actor. His uncle seems to have inspired him; he was a member of the French Foreign Legion and painted watercolors, including from Algeria. In the winter months, when there was no work, he was allowed to attend the arts and crafts school in St. Gallen. In 1949/1950 Schedler stayed with a friend in Paris, where he attended the Académie Julian and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière . His teachers were Fernand Léger and Johnny Friedlaender ; A visit to an exhibition with works by Georges Braque also influenced the young Schedler. A formative event seems to have been the meeting with Pablo Picasso , who was etching in the Grande Chaumière.

During his military service, in Vevey, he met his future wife Edith. The move to Zurich followed, where Schedler worked as a decorator for Globus and as a freelance painter and graphic artist who worked from studio to studio. In 1959 a daughter was born. Two years later, they moved to Warth near Frauenfeld, where the family moved into a dilapidated timber-framed house that was renovated from now on. In 1963 a son was born.

In addition to his artistic activity, Schedler worked at the Migros Club School in Zurich, where he taught painting, life drawing and figurative drawing, among other things. In 1967 he met Nora Gerber there, who was his student at the time. From 1969 their cooperation deepened, Schedler became their role model and sponsor. At the same time she became his lover. Numerous trips are documented, including to Ticino, Italy, France and Spain. The annual painting trips, which were carried out by the travel agency Rosita Schneider and which were under the artistic direction of Schedler, also led to the south.

Jacques Schedler became known to broader sections of the population through his books on Eastern Switzerland (St. Gallen, Thurgau, Schaffhausen, Lake Zurich) and Ticino. Many publications, including numerous children's books and record covers, were illustrated by Schedler. Orina - the great adventure of an orange , whose text is penned by daughter Cornelia Schedler , deserves special mention . Between 1974 and 1976 Schedler also worked as a caricaturist and illustrator for the satirical magazine Nebelspalter . Illustration work is also documented for the bridge builder and the church messenger. Schedler was a member of the GSMBA and, together with the Thurgau artist group, of which he was temporarily president, campaigned for the promotion of the arts. He was also interested in politics; he was well informed and sometimes intervened in local politics with pointed drawings (e.g. in 1976 for the vote on the Hemishofen SH bypass ). Jacques Schedler died on April 13, 1989 in the Frauenfeld Cantonal Hospital.

At the age of 14 (1941 or 1942) Schedler created his first picture - a copy of Rudolf Koller's famous Gotthard Post . Numerous Impressionist- inspired paintings and drawings followed. During his stay in Paris, heavily influenced by Fernand Léger and Johnny Friedlaender and inspired by Georges Bracque and Pablo Picasso, Schedler turned away from his realistic and perspective visualization and increasingly focused on abstraction and composition on the surface. Preferred motifs are his homeland, regional customs, landscapes of countries he has traveled, still lifes , Christian and socially critical topics. Public contracts, such as the staircase fresco in the Casino Frauenfeld and the stained glass in the Church of St. Josef in Rickenbach-Sulz , followed. In 1965, the canton of Thurgau acquired the picture prisoners for its art collection.

City watchman , Frauenfeld

Schedler first tried abstract painting around 1965, which he dealt intensively with between 1969 and 1972. Schedler seemed to be impressed for a short time by the success of Concrete Art , especially its most important representative, Max Bill . But he quickly returned to the figurative. His ties to his homeland and his love of flora and fauna were shown in the successful series of illustrated books on Eastern Switzerland (1972 Thurgau , 1973 Schaffhausen , 1974 St. Gallen , 1975 Lake Zurich ) and Ticino (1978) as well as in the catchy flower pictures that fetched high prices. The city watchman mural has adorned the eastern flank of the former Sonne and Gambrinus inns in Frauenfeld since 1982 .
