Jægerspris is a town on the Hornsherred peninsula on the island of Zealand in the north of the Danish region of Hovedstaden .

It was built around 1870 around Jægerspris Castle , which was the residence of the Danish King Frederik VII . The city, which is located on the west bank of the Roskilde Fjord in close proximity to several beaches on the Danish Baltic coast , has 4057 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) and was the administrative seat of the Jægerspris municipality until 2007 . Since an administrative reform it has belonged to Frederikssund Municipality , from whose administrative seat Frederikssund it is about six kilometers away.

In Jægerspris there is a base ( Jægersprislejren , JPL) of the Danish Army with a military training area ( Jægerspris Skyde- og Øvelsesterræn ). To the north of the city lies the Jægerspris Nordskov nature reserve , one of the most pristine forest areas in Denmark , with the English oak known as the congee , the oldest tree in the country and probably the oldest oak in Europe.

Jægerspris' partner municipalities are the rural municipality of Keila in Estonia , Kowary in Poland , Loppi in Finland , Lunner in Norway and Vetlanda in Sweden . The chemist Johan Kjeldahl and the ancient orientalist Jørgen Læssøe (1924–1993) were born in Jægerspris .
