Jake and McCabe - Through thick and thin (Original title: Jake and the Fatman ) is an American television series that ran from 1987 to 1992 on the US television station CBS . It was in Los Angeles and on O'ahu ( Hawaii turned). It was invented and produced by the successful team Dean Hargrove and Fred Silverman for Viacom .
William Conrad played the grumpy, thoroughly washed district attorney Jason Lochinvar McCabe, always accompanied by his bulldog Max, who could not be denied a certain resemblance to their master.
Joe Penny played the smart, dynamic investigator Jake Styles. Alan Campbell played the young prosecutor Derek Mitchell, who assisted McCabe and was mercilessly ordered around by him.
The beginning
Conrad as a prosecutor and Campbell as his assistant appeared in 1986 in the double episode "On Honor and Conscience and Family Feud" of Matlock Season 1, Episode 8, Conrad still under the name James L. McShane. A German shepherd dog acted as his mascot . Joe Penny also starred in this episode, but not on the side of the law, but as the son of a mob boss. Dean Hargrove was the producer.
action
McCabe hires Jake Styles - sometimes against his will, because he prefers to go on vacation - to investigate capital crimes such as robbery, murder, drug offenses, etc. And Styles goes about it, with charm, sophistication and sometimes quite unorthodox methods. In the first season the trial was often shown, in which McCabe was able to convict the accused with a clever move at the last minute. In the Hawaii seasons, everything is focused on Penny, who had become a crowd favorite. There were more action scenes - with Penny doing many of the stunts herself - and the character of Jake Styles was changed. The cool, sarcastic, Porsche driving investigator became a completely different Jake Styles, more humble and warm-hearted. His trademark: a white Ford Mustang convertible.
Background and miscellaneous
- Joe Penny often complained about the sterile scripts and called for human relationships - especially the father-son relationship between Styles and McCabe - to be given more prominence. He also resisted being viewed as Tom Selleck's successor and never appeared in shorts or Hawaiian shirts . The last two seasons were shot in Los Angeles again to give the series, as Hargrove said, a touch of " film noir ". While Conrad wanted to sign for another season, Penny refused, and the series was discontinued after 106 episodes despite the best ratings.
- Each episode bears the title of a popular song from the swing era.
- Although the series was a ratings hit, it was only shown once in the US. It was sold in 48 countries and broadcast a number of times in Germany , first on ZDF under the title “Fatman - Der Dicke und Ich”, then on Sat 1 , Pro 7 , Kabel 1 and Premiere . After Joe Penny's German dubbing actor Ulrich Gressieker died in 1990, Ivar Combrinck took over his role. As a dialogue book author and dubbing director, Combrinck was also responsible for the German version of the series. Michael Chevalier spoke for William Conrad , Alan Campbell was dubbed by Stefan Gossler .
- Guest stars were u. a. Tobin Bell , Polly Bergen , Ernest Borgnine , Marcia Cross , Melinda Culea , Robert Culp , Bruce Greenwood , Richard Hatch , Michael Madsen , Marlyn Mason , Leon Russom , Reiner Schöne , David Soul , Dick Van Dyke , Ally Walker .
