Jakob Mayr (born July 24, 1924 in Kirchbichl ; † September 19, 2010 in Salzburg ) was auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Salzburg .

Life

Jakob Mayr, the third of six children of a mountain farming family, visited the Borromäum in Salzburg and Schwaz. In 1943 he became a soldier, returned seriously wounded from the Eastern Front and from 1946 studied philosophy and theology at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Salzburg . Mayr received in the July 9, 1950 Salzburg the priesthood by the Archbishop of Salzburg Andreas Rohracher . He was initially a cooperator in Thiersee, Zell am Ziller, Mayrhofen and in St. Rupert and Virgil, the parish of Salzburg Cathedral . In 1957 he became cathedral preacher and youth minister . After working as prefect at the Archbishop's private grammar school Borromäum in Salzburg, he was pastor in Bad Häring and Wörgl. In 1970 he was elected to the Salzburg cathedral chapter and invested as cathedral chapter on March 15, 1970 . Mayr was Ordinary Chancellor of the Diocese of Salzburg.

He was on March 12, 1971 by Pope Paul VI. appointed titular bishop of Agbia and auxiliary bishop in Salzburg. The Archbishop of Salzburg, Eduard Macheiner , donated him episcopal ordination on May 20 of the same year in Salzburg Cathedral ; Co- consecrators were Andreas Rohracher, Archbishop Emeritus of Salzburg, and Johann Weber , Bishop of Graz-Seckau . On the occasion of his episcopal ordination he chose the motto Deus Caritas ( Latin , God is charity). Mayr was also appointed vicar general for the first time on January 17, 1973 by Archbishop Karl Berg and reappointed on February 26, 1988 by Archbishop Georg Eder . On November 22, 1993, Archbishop Georg Eder appointed him Episcopal Vicar for Institutes of Consecrated Life, Institutes of Apostolic Life and Secular Institutes. In his function as a member of the Austrian Bishops' Conference , Mayr was responsible for the seminar for church professions, for the small seminars , the Canisiusheim and the Austrian library.

On March 14, 2001, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

Jakob Mayr has received several awards for his commitment, including the 2007 Archbishop Rohracher Study Fund's honorary award for his life's work.

Jakob Mayr died of pneumonia in a nursing home in Salzburg on the evening of September 19, 2010 and was buried in the bishop's crypt in Salzburg Cathedral .
