Jakob Meiland (* 1542 in Senftenberg ; † December 31, 1577 in Hechingen ) was a German composer of the 16th century.

Life

Meiland came to Dresden as a choir boy and received training in the Dresden court choir . In 1558 he moved to the University of Leipzig . He then went on study trips to Italy and Flanders . In 1563 he was employed as court conductor at the court of Margrave Georg Friedrich von Brandenburg in Ansbach . On January 22, 1565, he married Klara Marschalin in Nuremberg . With her he had two children, Dorothea and Ursula. After 1568, Meiland worked on behalf of the margrave in Stuttgart , Meißen and Munich to recruit boys' choirs, among other things. In 1571 he fell seriously ill and was cared for by his old patron, Margrave Georg Friedrich. Meiland moved to Frankfurt am Main with his family . Despite his activity as a composer, the family was in need. From 1576 to 1577 he was court organist in Celle with Wilhelm the Younger , Georg Friedrich's father-in-law. During this employment he wrote numerous songs with mostly sad lyrics. He was then employed as court conductor in Hechingen in the county of Hohenzollern-Hechingen , where he died in 1577.

Meiland was one of the first German composers to have Venetian influences in the compositions.
