Jakob Strieder

Jakob Strieder (born December 18, 1877 in Dorchheim , † July 24, 1936 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) was a German economic historian .

Strieder studied history and political science in Breslau , Berlin , Greifswald , Leipzig and Bonn . He received his doctorate in 1903 under Aloys Schulte in Bonn , completed his habilitation in Leipzig in 1907 in medium and modern history and became a private lecturer there . In 1915 he was appointed associate professor in Leipzig . In 1920, on the recommendation of Max Weber, he was appointed associate professor to a newly established chair for economic history at the University of Munich , where he was appointed full professor in 1923 .

Strieder mainly worked on capitalism and trade history . In his dissertation, Genesis of Modern Capitalism , he critically examined Werner Sombart's theory that early capitalism developed on the basis of the income from land rents . On the other hand, he took the view that trade had played an essential role. Strieder also dealt with the history of the Fuggers early on . From 1920 to 1935 he headed the Princely and Countess Fugger Family and Foundation Archives in Augsburg . He also published the Fugger studies .

Strieder was chairman of the Association for Christian Art , a member of the historical commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and a corresponding member of the Hungarian Historical Society . In the Görres Society he headed the section for social and economic science until his death and was editor of the publications of this section.

Strieder was an active member of the KV Catholic student associations at each of his study locations .
