James David Forbes.

James David Forbes (born April 20, 1809 in Colinton near Edinburgh , † December 31, 1868 ) was a Scottish physicist .

Life

Forbes studied at the University of Edinburgh , where he was professor from 1833. He researched mainly in the fields of heat conduction , seismology and glaciology .

At the age of 19 he became a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh ; In 1832 he was elected a member ("Fellow") of the Royal Society of London . The Royal Society awarded him the Rumford Medal in 1838 and the Royal Medal in 1843 . In 1842 he became a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences . Since 1852 he was a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1867 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . The Forbes Glacier and Forbes Point headland in Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula bear his name.
