James Tien

James Tien ( Chinese  田 俊 / 田 俊 , Pinyin Tián jùn , as James Tien Chun ; born May 28, 1942 in Guangdong , China ) is a Chinese actor who mainly appeared in martial arts and kung fu films. He played alongside well-known martial artists such as Bruce Lee , Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung . He mostly appeared in supporting roles or as a villain.

Life

James Tien was born in the village of Chao'an . In 1958 he moved to Hong Kong with his family .

Tien's career began when he joined the Shaw Brothers in the late 1960s. He made his debut in 1968 in That Fiery Girl , his first significant role he had a year later in the film Raw Courage , directed by Lo Wei . After appearing in several Shaw Brothers films, he moved to Golden Harvest . There it starred in 1971 on the side of Bruce Lee in the film The Death Fist of Cheng Li , again directed by Lo Wei. Tien also worked with Lee and Wei in their next film, Greetings from Shanghai . A third collaboration with Lee took place with My last fight . In the original version of the film, Tien had a bigger role alongside Lee. After Lee's death, Tien's role in the finished film was massively reduced as the original scenes were considered lost. In the finished film, Tien only appears in one scene.

In 1976 Tien starred in John Woo's film Hand of Death alongside the "three brothers" Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao . After appearing in Hung's film debut The Iron-Fisted Monk a year later , he played the three minor roles in many of the films, mostly as a villain, e.g. B. in Winners and Sinners , Dragon Hero , Tokyo Powerman and Action Hunter . Tien also often worked with Lo Wei.

James Tien's last role was in 1996 in How to Meet the Lucky Stars . In 2000 he retired from acting.
