Jan Freiheit (born June 23, 1962 in Halle an der Saale ) is a German baroque cellist and gambist .

Live and act

Jan Freiheit is the son of the composer Peter Freiheit and the singer Inge Nahlik-Freiheit. From 1983 to 1988 he studied the cello at the Hanns Eisler Music Academy in what was then East Berlin . He was one of the co-founders of the Berlin Baroque Compagney . From 1989 to 1991 he studied viola da gamba with Siegfried Pank at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University of Music and Theater in Leipzig .

Jan Freiheit has been a solo cellist and viola player at the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin since 1992 . In addition to his orchestral and chamber music activities, he also appears as a soloist: He has made guest appearances as a solo gambist with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin in the Tonhalle Zurich and in the Wigmore Hall in London as a partner of Maurice Steger and performed with the Berliner Philharmoniker . The highlights of his solo career to date have been touring North America, where he played a viola viola concerto by Graun or a cello concerto by Vivaldi, performing at Carnegie Hall in New York City , the Library of Congress in Washington, DC and Canada , among others .

As an expert on historical performance practice and opera seria , Jan Freiheit is also active as a solo cellist at many different opera houses. So he worked u. a. at the Opéra de Monaco with the Orchester National de l'Opéra de Monte-Carlo, the Bavarian State Opera Munich with the Bavarian State Orchestra and at the Semperoper with the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden . A particularly intensive collaboration in the field of opera connects him with René Jacobs , as well as with Marcus Creed , Ivor Bolton , Paul McCreesh , Alan Curtis and Christopher Molds .

Concert tours have taken him to Australia, Japan, the USA, Canada, South America, Israel, France, Russia, England, Italy, Spain and other European countries.

From 2012 to 2017 Jan Freiheit had a teaching position at the University of the Arts Berlin for baroque violoncello and basso continuo practice for low strings and was appointed professor for baroque violoncello and historical cello instruments at the University of Music and Theater in Leipzig in autumn 2013 .
