Jane by Design is an American dramedy - television series with Erica Dasher in the lead role, designed by April Blair . It was produced from 2011 to 2012 by ABC Family Worldwide for the US cable broadcaster ABC Family . The series is about high school student Jane Quimby who, through a misunderstanding, finds herself in the job of an assistant to a successful designer. In the US, the series started on January 3, 2012 on ABC Family. The German-language first broadcast ran on March 31, 2015 on the German Disney Channel .

Jane Quimby is a regular 16-year-old high school student who lives with her older brother, Ben. The two have to get by on their own because their father has died and their mother disappeared a few years ago. With Ben currently unemployed, they are gradually falling behind on the bills for their house. Then Jane spots an advertisement in the newspaper for an internship at the Donovan Decker fashion company . She conducts her interview with the successful designer Gray Chandler Murray via video interview. But she thinks that Jane will present herself for the job as her assistant and does not give her time to clear up the misunderstanding. When Jane learns of the $ 32,000 annual salary, which Gray increases to 34,000 a short time later, Jane accepts the job.
From then on, she led a secret double life : in the morning she was a student and from midday she worked for Donovan Decker . She only tells her best friend Billy about this double life. At her job, however, she quickly realizes that the aggressive India is taking advantage of Gray's absence and so she tries by all means to boot Gray out to take over her job.

In August 2010, ABC Family ordered the teenage series What Would Jane Do as a pilot. At the end of October 2010 the main role was given to Erica Dasher . Furthermore, Andie MacDowell was engaged for another leading role. The male lead went to the newcomer Nick Roux . On April 14, 2011, the series was ordered under the new name Jane By Design with ten episodes. On March 1, 2012, ABC Family ordered another 8 episodes. In August 2012, the discontinuation was announced after the first season.

After the series was ordered in April 2011 to broadcast the first ten episodes finally began 3 January 2012 the cable channel ABC Family for a new episode of Switched at Birth . The pilot episode reached just over 1.6 million viewers and a rating of 0.6 in the advertising-relevant target group . She took over around 60 percent of the audience ratings of her lead-in. The broadcast of the last episode for the time being was shown on March 6, 2012, before the remaining eight produced episodes of the first season were shown from June 5, 2012. The series finale ran on July 31, 2012.
In Germany, the Disney Channel aired the series from March 31, 2015 to May 26 in double episodes.
