Life
Janet Rowley earned a BA in 1946 and an MD in 1948 from the University of Chicago. As a research assistant, she worked at a clinic for disabled children at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago , where she became interested in cytogenetics . As a post-doctoral student , she worked at Oxford University in 1961/1962 and 1970/1971 . As a mother, she could only work part-time; nevertheless she received her first professorship (associate professor) in 1969 and a full professorship in 1978 at the University of Chicago. She remained scientifically active as the author of numerous scientific publications into old age. She received numerous honors for her scientific activities (see below).
In 1948, Janet Davidson married Donald A. Rowley. The marriage resulted in four sons. On December 17, 2013, Janet Rowley died at the age of 88 from complications from ovarian cancer .
Act
Rowley was able to prove in 1972 that the Philadelphia chromosome - a genetic abnormality in certain leukemias - is caused by a translocation of the main part of the long arm from chromosome 9 to chromosome 22 . This made her a pioneer in research into cytogenetics in oncology . Rowley always endeavored to translate the findings of basic medicine from the laboratory into clinical practice and was thus one of the protagonists of translational medicine .
