After the 2016 season , Elliott became a free agent . On March 14, 2017, he was rewritten by the Packers for a year. He was awarded a $ 1.6 million contract, which is only slightly less than if the Packers hadn't let him become a free agent.

On September 3, 2017, the Packers traded Elliott for a pick in the 2018 NFL Draft for the Dallas Cowboys . He was released on September 19, 2017. The point at which Elliott was fired and the fact that he was inactive in the Cowboys' first two games meant the Packers did not receive the conditional pick for the seventh round. According to Rob Demovsky from ESPN, Elliott should have been active for two games.

On January 20, 2018, the New Orleans Saints signed Elliott. Before the start of the season, he was dismissed as part of the final squad reduction.

In early 2019, the San Antonio Commanders from the newly formed Alliance of American Football signed Elliott. After the eighth game day of the first season, the game was stopped due to financial issues. By then, Elliott had achieved 7.5 sacks, leading the league. On April 8, 2019, the Miami Dolphins signed Elliott. He was released at the end of July 2019.

On August 22, 2019, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Elliott. As part of the final downsizing of the squad before the start of the regular season, he was dismissed. After the first day of play, the Steelers signed Elliott again. He was released again on October 11, 2019, and the Steelers recruited Elliott on October 23, 2019. On October 31, 2019, the Steelers released Elliott. He was re-signed on November 14, 2019. However, the Steelers released Elliott on November 18, 2019. In late August 2020, Elliott was re-signed by the Steelers.
