Jean-Noël Thorel (born July 31, 1947 in Châtillon ) is a French biologist , pharmacist and poker player .

Entrepreneur

In 1977 Thorel developed the first shampoo without drying active washing substances. In 1985 he founded in Lyon the company Bioderma , which specializes in skin care products. Bioderma is now represented in over 100 countries worldwide. Thorel was one of the richest people in France in 2016 with an estimated net worth of € 250 million . He lives in Paris .

Poker career

Thorel has been taking part in renowned live tournaments since 2008 . He almost exclusively plays high roller events, i.e. poker tournaments with buy-ins of at least US $ 10,000 .

At the end of January 2009 Thorel took second place behind Juha Helppi at the High Roller of the European Poker Tour (EPT) in Deauville and received prize money of 115,200 euros. In May 2011, he made the money at the EPT Main Event in Madrid . At the beginning of September 2011 he finished 14th at the Main Event of the World Poker Tour in Paris for more than 30,000 euros. In September 2013 Thorel landed in third place at the EPT High Roller in Barcelona for 181,500 euros. At the beginning of February 2015 he finished second behind Josip Šimunić in the high roller at the EPT Deauville and received over 200,000 euros for it. In mid-December 2015 he took second place behind Rainer Kempe at the EPT High Roller in Prague for 383,200 euros. At the beginning of November 2017 Thorel was successful for the first time at a World Series of Poker event and cashed at the Colossus of the World Series of Poker Europe at King's Resort in Rozvadov . In January 2018, he finished third in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure High Roller in the Bahamas for around $ 340,000. In mid-April 2018 Thorel reached the final table at two super high roller events of the partypoker Millions in Barcelona and received prize money totaling almost one million euros for his third and fifth place. At the end of August 2018, he took second place behind fellow countryman Benjamin Pollak at an EPT event in Barcelona and received 703,000 euros. In October 2019 Thorel finished second in the Diamond High Roller of the World Series of Poker Europe in Rozvadov and secured his highest prize money to date of more than 1.3 million euros.

In total, Thorel has made more than seven million dollars playing poker in live tournaments. He was nicknamed "The Nutty Professor" ( German  Der verrückte Professor ).
