Jean-Pierre Adams (born March 10, 1948 in Dakar , French West Africa , † September 6, 2021 in Nîmes ) was a French football player on the position of central defender . Between 1972 and 1976 he played a total of 22 international matches for the French national football team . From March 1982 until his death, he was due to an anesthesia error in a coma .
Life
Adams was born on March 10, 1948 in French West Africa, now Senegal , where he lived until he was ten. During a pilgrimage to Montargis in the Loiret department together with his grandmother, a devout Catholic, she enrolled him at a local Catholic school in Saint-Louis de Montargis. Shortly after arriving in the country, he was adopted by a French couple. During his studies, Adams worked for a local rubber manufacturer and started playing football for several local clubs in the Loiret area.
Adams married his wife Bernadette in April 1969. A son was born that same year and another in 1976.
Club career
Adams began his playing career in 1967 in the position of a striker. With the team of Entente BFN he reached second place in the amateur league Championnat de France Amateur . In 1970 he joined Olympique Nîmes and switched to the position of central defender. With strong performances he recommended himself in 1972 as a dangerous defender for the national team. In 1972 Nîmes won the Alpine Cup and was runner-up in Division 1 in 1971/72 .
In 1973 he switched to OGC Nice , and in 1977 he joined Paris Saint-Germain . During this time he was always a regular at his clubs. After his contract with the Parisians expired, he joined FC Mulhouse for one season in 1979 . From 1980 to 1981 he ended his career at FC Chalon, where he played with Josef Klose , Miroslav Klose's father .
National team
His move to central defense and strong performances at Nîmes soon brought him into the focus of the French national team. On June 15, 1972, he made his international debut in an unofficial international match against a selection of African footballers. On October 13 of the same year, as part of qualifying for the 1974 World Cup, he played his first official international match against the USSR national soccer team , which France won 1-0. In the next few games he fought for a regular place in central defense alongside his future friend Marius Trésor and was nicknamed the Black Rock thanks to his tough style of play and his confident demeanor . On September 1, 1976, he played his last of a total of 22 international matches against the national team of Denmark . He was denied participation in a European or World Cup.
Surgery and coma
On March 17, 1982 Adams had his knee operated on at the Hôpital Édouard Herriot in Lyon . The treating anesthetist dosed the anesthetic incorrectly and Adams suffered a bronchospasm , that is, the muscles that span the airways cramped and he suffered a lack of oxygen in the brain. Since then lay Adams 39 ½ years in a vegetative state . He died on September 6, 2021 at the age of 73.
The anesthetist was found guilty in a 1990 trial. He was sentenced to a fine of 750 euros and a month's suspended prison sentence.
