Jean Fabre
Jean Fabre (* 13. December 1904 in Murat-sur-Vèbre , Region Midi-Pyrenees , † 21st August 1975 ) was a French linguist and literary scholar .
life and work
Fabre went to school in Albi and Toulouse , went through the École normal supérieure and got the Agrégation . From 1929 to 1939 he taught at the Institut français and at the University of Warsaw , from 1940 to 1942 at the Lycée du Parc in Lyon . From 1942 to 1952 he taught as maître de conférences and later as professor at the University of Strasbourg . He completed his habilitation in Paris in 1952 with the two dissertations Stanislas-Auguste Poniatowski et l'Europe des lumières. Etude de cosmopolitisme (Paris 1952, 1984) and (Ed.) Diderot, Le Neveu de Rameau . Edition critique avec notes et lexique (Geneva 1950) and was professor of 18th century French literature at the Sorbonne from 1952 to 1969 . In 1970 he still taught at Yale University and in 1973 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
Fabre was a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (1959) and the British Academy (corresponding member 1970). He was an honorary doctor of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan (1966) and the Free University of Brussels (1969). Fabre was a Knight of the Legion of Honor .
