Live and act
Jean-François Boissonade's family came from Gascony . After studying at the Collège d'Harcourt in Paris, he entered the civil service in 1792. After his dismissal in 1795, he was reinstated by Lucien Bonaparte in 1799 and appointed secretary in the prefecture of the Haute-Marne department.
In addition to his job, Boissonade dealt with Greek literature. In order to be able to concentrate fully on his studies, he finally resigned from civil service. On September 8, 1857, Jean François Boissonade de Fonarabie died in Passy and found his final resting place on the Cimetière de Montmartre (Division 16).
reception
Boissonade was one of the most prolific editors of Greek literature. His text editions made many remote authors available for research, but did not permanently meet the demands of scientific text criticism . Nevertheless, his life's work is an important achievement in French philology of the 19th century. He edited many texts for the first time .
