Jeanne Piland
Jeanne Piland (born December 3, 1945 in Raleigh , North Carolina ) is an American opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ).
Life
Piland began vocal training at the age of 14. She studied with Geraldine Cate at St. Mary's College, University of North Carolina, then with Gladys White and Carolyn Grant.
After first appearances in smaller venues, Piland made her debut at the New York City Opera , where she also appeared on the occasion of Plácido Domingo's conducting debut . Then she first sang the youthful trouser roles in her field, Cherubino, Nicklausse and Siebel, as well as Lola in “ Cavalleria rusticana ”.
At her long-standing parent company, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (in Düsseldorf and Duisburg ), she engaged Grischa Barfuss for the first time in 1976 for Silla in Hans Pfitzner's “ Palestrina ”.
She then specialized in the great Strauss roles (Octavian, composer) and Mozart roles (Dorabella, Sesto and Idamante).
She had engagements and further successes in Hamburg, Munich, Berlin, Semperoper Dresden (on the 75th anniversary of the premiere in 1986 in the role of Octavian as “best Strauss interpreter”), Vienna, Zurich, Milan, Monte Carlo, Nice, Amsterdam and at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London. This was followed by guest appearances in their American homeland (Houston, Los Angeles, Washington DC and Miami). She can also be heard at major festivals (including the Salzburg Festival , Aix-en-Provence ).
As a concert singer, Piland developed a diverse repertoire, including Hector Berlioz 's “Les Nuits d'Eté”, Maurice Ravel's “Schéhérazade”, the songs of Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler . In addition, she gave numerous recitals with Charles Spencer .
Jeanne Piland is a professor at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf.
