Jerzy Afanasyev

Jerzy Afanasjew (born September 11, 1932 in Vilnius , † September 26, 1991 in Danzig ) was a Polish poet , prose writer , screenwriter and director . In his works he combined elements of the grotesque , the absurd , the fairytale and the fantastic .

Life

Afanasjew spent the first years of his life in Vilnius and moved to Warsaw with his family in 1938 . During the Second World War he lost his mother in the Warsaw Uprising and his father in the concentration camp. After the war ended in 1945 Afanasjew lived in Płock and attended the local grammar school. From 1948 to 1950 he attended the arts and crafts school in Basel . He then returned to Poland in 1950 and went to the Archtiektur grammar school in Białystok . From 1952 to 1953 he worked as a construction technician in Poznan and moved to Gdansk in 1954, where he studied architecture at the Technical University of Gdansk until 1957 . During this time he was a co-founder of the student theater Bim-Bom . From 1958 to 1961 he studied at the Academy of Arts in Sopot. From 1957 to 1968 he worked with the Przekrój newspaper , for which he wrote a feature section. A selection of these features appeared in 1979 as Poczta Afanasjewa . He also wrote for the Szpilki magazine from 1960 to 1962. From 1959 to 1965 he and his wife Alina Ronczewska-Afanasjew directed the pantomime theater Cyrk Rodziny Afanasjew Tralabomba. In 1960 he was admitted to the Union of Polish Writers . From 1962 to 1964 he was also in charge of the lyric section of the monthly Litery .

From 1962 to 1966 he studied directing at the State University of Film, Television and Theater Łódź . He made his debut as a theater director in 1964 with the production of the play Indyk by Sławomir Mrożek at the New Theater Łódź . He made his debut as a television director in 1965 with his own adaptation Zdarzenia by Jack London . He became a member of the PZPR in 1970 . From 1971 to 1982 and from 1989 he was the main director of the Gdansk television center . From 1972 to 1981 he was also the chairman of the Gdansk Department of the Polish Filmmakers' Association. He joined Solidorność in 1980 and left the PZPR on December 13, 1981. After this resignation, he was dismissed from his post on Gdansk television. In 1988 he became a member of the Polish PEN Club and the Association of Polish Writers . At the beginning of 1990 he was again the main director of the Danzig TV headquarters.

Afanasyev died on September 26, 1991 in Gdansk.
