Ji'an

Ji'an ( Chinese  吉安 鄉 , Pinyin Jí'ān Xiāng ) is a rural community in Hualien County in the Republic of China, Taiwan .

location

Ji'an is located on the Pacific coast immediately south of the district capital Hualien . The north-south or east-west extension of the municipality is between 8 and 10 kilometers. The neighboring parishes are the city of Hualien in the northeast, and the rural parishes of Xiulin in the west and Shoufeng in the south. Ji'an is located at the northern end of the Huatung Valley , which extends parallel to the coast for about 180 kilometers to the south. In the east the Pacific forms and in the west the foothills of the central mountains form the natural borders. Geologically, the municipal area is predominantly an alluvial plain that was created by sediment deposits from rivers that flow here. The climate is subtropical with annual mean temperatures of 23–24 ° C and characterized by the monsoons , with annual rainfall of over 2000 mm (see the climate diagram of Hualien).

history

The history of Ji'an corresponds to that of the neighboring communities on the east coast of Taiwan. The indigenous people of the area were Austronesian members of Taiwanese indigenous peoples . In the "Reports from Taiwan" ( 臺灣 府 志 ) from 1696, during the reign of the Qing Emperor Kangxi , a human settlement in the area of today's Ji'an is mentioned in writing for the first time. From the second half of the 19th century, an immigration of Han Chinese (mainly Min Nan and Hakka ) began. At the time of Japanese colonial rule (1895-1945), the immigration of Japanese settlers to the east coast of Taiwan was promoted. Various model settlements were established for this purpose, including Yoshino (吉野) in what is now Ji'an. The settlement was named after the river of the same name in Tokushima Prefecture , where most of the first settlers came from. After Taiwan was transferred to the Republic of China in 1945, the Japanese settlers had to leave the country again. Yoshino Township was renamed Ji'an on January 1, 1948 , and the area was organized as a rural community in the newly formed Hualien County. After the collapse of the Chinese national government in mainland China in 1945–1949, many Kuomintang supporters from the mainland, including many soldiers and their families, also came to the area.

population

With a population of about 84,000, Ji'an is the second largest municipality in terms of population in Hualien County. According to official statistics, 15,348 people (around 18 percent) belonged to the indigenous population at the end of 2017. Mostly they were Americans and to a lesser extent Truku .

Agriculture

The fertile alluvial soil and the mild climate favor agricultural use. Well-known local agricultural products are rice, taro and leek .

traffic

The main traffic arteries are the provincial roads 11 and 11C ( 11 丙 ) running near the coast , as well as the provincial roads 9 and 9C ( 9 丙 ) running further inland . The Taitung Line ( 臺 東線 ) of the Taiwanese Railways crosses Ji'an largely parallel to Provincial Road 9 and has a stop here.
