Jiang Shuo ( Chinese  蔣 朔 , Pinyin Jiáng Shuò ; * 1958 in Beijing , People's Republic of China ) is a Chinese sculptor with Austrian citizenship who lives in Carinthia , Berlin and Beijing.

Life

Jiang Shuo was born in Beijing in 1958 . She began her education in 1978 at the China Central Academy of Arts and Design , now the Art Academy of Tsinghua University in Beijing, where she graduated in sculpture after four years. Jiang Shuo became a master student of Zhen Ke at the same academy and was the first female sculptor to be awarded an academic title after the Cultural Revolution . In 1986, she received a lectureship at the China Central Academy of Arts and Design .

On June 6, 1989, two days after the massacre on " Tiananmen Square ", she, her child and her husband, the sculptor Wu Shaoxiang , were able to leave China with the help of the Austrian embassy. The family settled in Austria. In 1996 Jiang Shuo set up her own studio in Carinthia , and in 2006 she opened a studio in Beijing. In the same year she started a major exhibition tour through Asia. In 2012 she opened a studio in Berlin. Jiang Shuo is one of the most famous sculptors in China. Her works are in private collections and public museums, galleries and sculpture parks in Asia, North America and Europe.

Jiang Shuo's earlier bronze works have a folkloric quality. These achieved high recognition in China. The sculptures refer to happy childhood memories, who enjoy playing sports, making music and enjoying the embrace of their mothers. Jiang became famous for her iconic Red Guard series, which she started in 2003. These anonymous, open-mouthed warriors who wear the uniform of the Red Guards are cast using the old lost wax technique . The figures from this phase either carry a red flag or the “ Maobibel ” and reflect both Jiang Shuo's personal experience as a young Red Guard during the Cultural Revolution and her observations of China at the time.

After Jiang Shuo experienced firsthand the changes in China, where the formerly hated Western values were now more and more readily accepted by the political elite, her art changed. The Red Guards, who had previously persecuted the " bourgeois " elements of society, had now become successful businessmen and capitalists who fueled China's burgeoning economy. From then on, Jiang Shuo's characters were given symbols of the Western lifestyle instead of the red flags and Mao Bibles . They were singing karaoke , drinking Coca-Cola , ate junk food from McDonalds , drove flashy cars - all based on the lifestyle of wealthy businessmen who lead full with commercial life of luxury. The fun, cartoon-like appearance of these Red Guards brings them closer to our current ideas about beauty that are shaped by pop culture . The subject is serious, but the presentation is entertaining. Jiang Shuo's sculptures make the viewer laugh, but at the same time evoke a complex feeling of restlessness.
