Life

Wu Shaoxiang was born in Jiangxi Province in 1957 . From 1969 to 1978 he was not allowed to attend school and worked as a farmer, bricklayer and raftsman. From 1978 to 1982 he studied sculpture at the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute, then with Zhen Ke at the China Central Academy of Arts and Design in Beijing .

At the end of the eighties he was a member of the Chinese avant-garde movement "New Wave Art". The point behind this new group was to review the tradition in the face of the increasing influence of Western culture in China and to conduct bold experiments to introduce Chinese art to the modern world. In 1988 the Chinese National Museum organized its first large personal exhibition and in the same year he was the first modern Chinese artist to place his sculpture "Meditation" in public spaces in Europe. In 1987 he graduated from the China Central Academy of Arts and Design in Beijing and taught at the same academy until he had to leave his homeland in 1989 as an advocate of the democracy movement. On June 6, 1989, two days after the massacre on Tiananmen Square , he was able to leave China with the help of the Austrian embassy. Wu Shaoxiang settled in Austria with his wife Jiang Shuo , who is also a sculptor, and their son. In 1991 he created “Apple”, his first sculpture made entirely of coins. It was included in the Guinness Book of Records in 1995 and is now in the Austrian National Bank . Wu Shaoxiang obtained Austrian citizenship in 1993 and in the same year published a book about the sculptures he has made since his arrival in Europe. Wu Shaoxiang exhibited in Europe and Asia during this time. In 1996, Wu Shaoxiang and his wife Jiang Shuo built a new studio in Ebental ( Carinthia ) and wrote his autobiography "In the shadow of the sun". In 2006, Wu Shaoxiang set up a studio in Beijing and published the book "Art of Sculpture", which is becoming a textbook for all Chinese universities. Wu Shaoxiang has been visiting professor at the Academy of Fine Arts at Fu Dan University in Shanghai since 2008 . Due to its increasing popularity, a studio was opened in Berlin in 2012 . From 2017 he is visiting professor at the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts. Wu Shaoxiang now lives alternately in Austria, Berlin and Beijing.

Before Wu Shaoxiang left China in 1989 , he was already known in Chinese art circles. As part of the New Wave Art movement, he was one of the avant-garde artists who tracked down the contemporary impulses of the global art world and internationalized Chinese art. Wu was a passionate proponent of modern concepts in his sculptural work. His female abstract body sculptures from this period broke away from the conventional and conservative style. These works opened a new chapter in modern Chinese art history . Wu's inspirations back then were both Brâncuși and Arp as well as Duchamp with his ironic sculptures. With all these ingredients, his sculptures conveyed a rather obscure but profound message that was not really appreciated by his colleagues in the 1980s. Striking social criticism or ideas about how to deconstruct modern art language were more important to them.

After June 4, 1989 ( Tian'anmen massacre ), Wu and his family moved to Austria. As a Chinese artist who initially fought in a foreign country and witnessed the globalization of the world and its impact on the world of art, Wu inevitably faced a crossroads. As a postmodernist , he had to deconstruct his “tradition” or reinterpret the “tradition” of his artistic upbringing. Wu selected the well-known historical masterpieces of Western art to express the themes of his metaphorical messages. Wu commented on his source material - coins and later banknotes - with the following words: “Inventions can free people from physical limitations, but they also lead to unexpected new limitations. Currency is like this: it was invented to make it easier to exchange goods, but it came back to dominate people's behavior and minds in the end. Coins as a kind of normal material like stone, wood or metal can be used to make sculptures. ”The idea of“ money ”, illustrated by the coins and banknotes he uses, is in his mind incompatible with the real value of art. However, the exact interpretation of his works is still unclear and fuzzy. He is the first in the history of sculpture to use coins exclusively and persistently to make sculptures. Wu's works go beyond the traditional definition of sculpture. The raw material used in his art is not only an essential part of his working substance, but also an art form in itself.
