Jimmy Bannister
James "Jimmy" Bannister (born September 20, 1880 in Leyland , Lancashire , † December 18, 1953 ibid) was an English football player on the position of a striker , who in the 1907/08 season became the first championship team in the history of the English record champions Manchester United belonged.
Life
Bannister began his career at his hometown club FC Leyland, from which he also for the county came domiciled Lancashire Chorley FC.
In 1902 he came to the second division Manchester City , with whom he consequently won the second division championship of the 1902/03 season.
After the Citizens were found guilty of illegal payments by the Football Association in May 1906 and the majority of their players were banned until the end of 1906, the city rivals took advantage of this fact and acquired four players (in addition to Bannister, these were Herbert Burgess , Billy Meredith and Sandy Turnbull ), who were all part of Manchester United's starting line-up when the Red Devils celebrated their first league title in their club's history in the 1907/08 season.
In October 1909 he left Manchester and was henceforth under contract with the first English football champion Preston North End until the latter was relegated from the first division at the end of the 1911/12 season.
