Stephen "Jo Jo" English (born February 4, 1970 in Frankfurt am Main , Federal Republic of Germany ) is a former American basketball player of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He now works as a college and high school coach
Career
college
Born in Frankfurt, English grew up in Hopkins , South Carolina . He led his Lower Richland High School Diamond Hornets to two 4A high school state championships in South Carolina. After high school he played between 1988 and 1992 for the Gamecocks the University of South Carolina and scored 1439 points in 115 games. He reached the tournament of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship in 1989 and the National Invitation Tournament in 1991, was elected to the All-Metro Second Team of the Metropolitan Conference in 1991 , to which the Gamecocks belonged between 1983 and 1991, and with a varsity every year Letter excellent.
NBA
The Chicago Bulls signed English for six games in December 1992. In the same season he played for the Tri-City Chinook of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), a basketball minor league , which existed until 2009 and also some from the D-League - franchises should emerge. The next season he moved to the La Crosse Catbirds and was re-signed by the Bulls in November 1993. He played 36 regular season games and seven postseason games . Here he became known nationwide against the New York Knickerbockers through a physical altercation with Derek Harper . The hustle and bustle involved both benches and shifted to the spectator stands under the eyes of Commissioner David Stern . Senior Vice President Rod Thorn imposed bans on one and two games against English and Harper. The Eastern Conference semifinals were lost in three to four games without Michael Jordan . English played eight games for the Bulls of the coming season in November 1994 and was again removed from the squad.
English from then on played in the CBA or abroad. In addition to 21 games for the Adelaide 36ers , he played one game for the Purefoods Corned Beef Cowboys in the Philippine Basketball Association until he was injured. Two years later he played one season for the St. Lucia Realtors, but was subsequently suspended for life in the Philippines for breach of contract. He also played in Turkey, Israel and France. In Israel he was the record scorer in the 1999/2000 season.
Coaching
After his active career, English returned to the University of South Carolina and completed a degree in criminal law. At the same time he was the assistant coach of the women's team. He then worked at high school and junior varsity level as assistant and head coach for women's and men's teams at his own high school, Eau Claire and Scott's Branch High School.
Between 2013 and 2015 he was English Head Coach of Sumter High School Gamecocks and led them to the 4A State Championship in 2015. From 2015 to 2017 he was the assistant coach of the Catawba College Indians in the NCAA Division II.
English has been Head Coach of the Richland Northeast High School Cavaliers since 2018 (as of 2019).
