Joachim Auth (born May 22, 1930 in Lieberose ; † March 14, 2011 in Ludwigsfelde ) was a German physicist , chairman of the Physical Society of the GDR and university lecturer , specializing in semiconductor technology and solid state physics .

Life

Joachim Auth was born as the son of a sales representative in Lieberose, where his grandmother Ida-Luise Auth was known as a local poet and his grandfather worked as a city treasurer . In Cottbus , he attended high school and began around 1950 in the Soviet Union , a physics degree , which he at the 1955 Humboldt University Berlin graduated. Auth then worked as a research assistant at the University's II Physics Institute. In 1960 he received his doctorate and his habilitation in 1966 . In 1955, Auth joined the SED . In 1960 he took over the management of the development department for diodes in the television electronics plant in Berlin-Oberschöneweide . From 1964 to 1967 he was scientific director at the semiconductor plant in Frankfurt (Oder) and in 1967 he became professor for experimental physics . After Robert Rompe retired as director of the former Second Physics Institute at Humboldt University in 1968, Joachim Auth took over the management of this research facility and taught semiconductor physics. The research results provided the basis for the development of microelectronics in the GDR. As part of the restructuring of the Humboldt University, Auth became head of the physics section.

In 1965, the GDR government appointed him as a member of the Research Council , as chairman of the National Committee for Physics and a member of the council for higher education and technical schools in the GDR. From 1966 to 1975 Auth was a member of the Semiconductor Commission of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics . From 1969 to 1992 he was a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . In 1974 he was appointed Vice Rector for Natural Sciences and Technology at the Humboldt University in Berlin. After the closure of numerous scientific institutions in the GDR, Joachim Auth gave up all his offices in 1990. In the Physical Society, of which he was chairman from 1988 to 1990, he continued to do voluntary work and came out with numerous honors from other scientists, including Gustav Magnus , Robert Rompe, Hans-Jürgen Treder .

Auth's areas of work included solid state physics , semiconductor physics and technology , especially photoelectric phenomena and semiconductor radiation receivers . He published his research results or theoretical considerations in scientific journals and edited volumes. From 1970 to 2003 Auth was a member of the editorial team for the international trade journals in the physica status solidi series .

From 1981 to 1990 Auth was a member of the Berlin city council for the SED . After the turnaround and the closure of the GDR Academy of Sciences, he became a member of the Leibniz Society . In 1992 he retired , last lived in Rangsdorf near Berlin and died in 2011 in Ludwigsfelde .
