Joachim Borneff

Joachim Otto Borneff (born October 2, 1920 in Coburg , † March 19, 2001 in Mainz ) was a German hygienist .

Life

His parents were the Sparkasse manager Hugo Borneff and Frieda Borneff, née Berndsen. From 1927 to 1931 he attended elementary school, from 1931 to 1939 the secondary school in Coburg. In the winter semester of 1939/1940 he began studying medicine at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg , which he had to interrupt again in 1940 for labor and military service. From the winter semester 1942/1943 to the winter semester 1944/1945 he continued it at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg and in the winter semester 1945/1946 again in Erlangen. On July 6, 1946, he obtained the medical state examination .

On January 10, 1947 he was promoted to dr. med. PhD ; his dissertation was entitled "Investigations and considerations on the clinical picture of pernicious anemia based on the cases of the Würzburg clinic". From February 1, 1947, he worked as an assistant at the Pathological Institute in Erlangen; on July 16, 1948, he moved to the Royal Bavarian Bacteriological Research Institute there. In 1949 he returned to the university and from March 1st received a position as a scientific assistant at the Institute for Medical Hygiene, where he worked until 1961. On January 26, 1956 , he completed his habilitation with a thesis entitled “About the biological effectiveness of optical radiation with special consideration of fluorescent tube light” for the subjects of hygiene and bacteriology and on April 25, he received a position as a private lecturer in Erlangen. He had been married to Margarete Sieges since 1946 and had two children with her.

On April 1, 1961, he succeeded Heinrich Kliewe as Professor of Hygiene and Bacteriology and Director of the Hygiene Institute at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and held this post until his retirement on March 31, 1989. In the year of office 1966–1967 served he as dean of the medical faculty. Borneff was president of the Rudolf Schülke Foundation and chairman of the working group for hygiene and cleanliness. In addition, he was a member of the Hydrogeology Section of the German Society for Geology and the German Association for the Gas and Water Industry .
