Hans Klenk (entrepreneur)

Hans Klenk (born April 3, 1906 in Oßweil ; † March 7, 1983 in Mainz ) was a German entrepreneur , inventor , patron and benefactor . He was the founder of Hakle and an honorary citizen of the city of Ludwigsburg .

Life

After attending secondary school and doing a bank apprenticeship, Klenk worked in the paper industry and other branches of industry. During the Second World War he was in command of the flak barracks on the current grounds of the University of Mainz .

Hans Klenk was married to Elly Thomas (1903-1994). The son Hans-Dieter Klenk, who took over the father's company, comes from the marriage. Hans Klenk was buried in the main cemetery in Mainz .

Company founder and entrepreneur

In 1928, Klenk founded the Hakle company, named from the first letters of his first and last name, in the former provisions office of his hometown Ludwigsburg . Toilet paper was produced in the morning and distributed in the afternoon.

In the course of the development of his company, Klenk was the first to offer a 1000-sheet roll of toilet paper and expanded its range to include additional hygiene papers . Due to the expansion, he relocated his company to Mainz in 1938 for strategic reasons and in the 1960s was considered the largest specialty paper manufacturer in the hygiene sector within the EEC .

A long-standing employee from 1959 to 1983 was Herbert Bonewitz , who was responsible for the company's own magazine Die Rolle from 1960 and last worked as authorized signatory and head of corporate communications.

social commitment

Thanks to Klenk's financial contribution, the Hans-Klenk-Haus retirement home was built in the Salonwald in Ludwigsburg. It has since been torn down and replaced by a new building on Talstrasse.

  • In 1952 he donated the redesign of the 1945 heavily damaged choir windows in the Christ Church in Mainz by the Darmstadt-born glass designer Max Lüder.
  • In 1962 he donated the Hans Klenk fountain based on a design by Rolf Ziffzer on Kaiserstraße in front of the Christ Church in Mainz.
  • In 1963, Klenk donated the well, which was built on the campus of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in 1964 and is popularly known as "water flushing" and which was modernized in 2005 with funds from his son Hans-Dieter Klenk.
  • In 1967 he donated the war memorial on Breite Strasse in Gonsenheim based on the design and execution of the architect and sculptor Adalbert Ditt.
  • In 1975 he and other people donated the “Citizens Column” on Kirchstrasse in Gonsenheim, based on a design by Erwin Scheerer .

Hans Klenk Foundation

On June 3, 1966, the Hans Klenk Foundation was established, which made funds available to the individual faculties in alternating order to promote scientific work and which financially endowed the Hans Klenk Prize. It was dissolved in 2017.
