Wilhelm Luttermann (2008)

Wilhelm Luttermann (* 1936 in Offensen , actually: Johann Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Luttermann, in Esperanto : Vilhelmo Lutermano) is a German Esperantist who translates from French and German into Esperanto and is active in the left Esperanto movement: a founding member of the Monda Asembleo Socia (MAS) and member of the Sennacieca Asocio Tutmonda (SAT) and the international communist organization Komunistoj . He is editor-in-chief of the Esperanto edition of the French monthly newspaper Le Monde diplomatique ( Le Monde diplomatique en Esperanto - eo.mondediplo.com).

Surname

Luttermann's mother tongue is Low German ; in this language his first name is Willem . In order to honor his ancestors, his parents gave him four first names: Johann, Heinrich, Friedrich and Wilhelm, the last of which is the first name. Since these four first names and the first name Wilhelm alone caused him linguistic and orthographic inconveniences in different countries, he has taken the stage name Vilhelmo Lutermano, which is spoken and written correctly by Esperantists all over the world.

Life

Luttermann was born in Offensen near Celle (now part of Wienhausen ) in Lower Saxony in 1936 . After four years of schooling in the einklassigen Schoolhouse he visited in Celle out the Hermann-Billung High School , then the humanistic gymnasium Ernestinum , moving on to middle school for boys at Holy Cross and after their launch at the Hermann-Billung High School , where he 1958 Graduated from high school. He studied German and Romance languages in Göttingen , Freiburg im Breisgau , Vienna , Munich and at the Free University in West Berlin . He then worked in the Berlin district of Neukölln as a teacher of German and French (as well as cycling and shorthand ).

In 1970 he left the SPD and became a member of the Communist Socialist Unity Party Berlin-West, which later became the Socialist Unity Party of West Berlin (SEW). After a speech as a delegate at the SEW party congress, he got a professional ban process . This process lasted seven years and ended in October 1981 with his acquittal.

From 1990 to 2002 he lived in southern France and from 1998 in Cuba with his wife María Julia Cárdenas Cápiro and their children Marla and Karlo.

After decades of his activity against Esperanto, he changed his attitude through a broadcast on French radio and learned the Esperanto language from September 1988 (textbook for Germans: Tesi la testudo ). At almost the same time, he suffered a serious accident that made his professional work impossible. Since then he has devoted himself to translations, first German literature, then from French and, from 2002, the monthly newspaper Le Monde diplomatique en Esperanto .
