Joe L. Hensley

Joseph Louis "Joe" Hensley (born March 19, 1926 in Bloomington , Indiana ; died August 27, 2007 in Madison , Indiana) was an American science fiction and crime writer and lawyer .

Life

After serving in the United States Navy in 1946, Hensley studied law at Indiana University , where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1950 and was admitted to the bar in 1955, after having been drafted again from 1951 to 1952. In 1950 he married Charlotte Ruth Bettinger, with the he had a son. From 1955 he worked as a lawyer in Madison, from 1963 to 1966 he acted as a prosecutor for the counties Jefferson and Switzerland . In the meantime he was from 1961 to 1962 as an MP for Jefferson and Scott Counties in his state's parliament, the Indiana General Assembly . From 1975 to 1977 he was a judge in a county court, from 1977 to 1988 in the Court for the Fifth Judicial District of Indiana. From 1989 he was a senior partner in a law firm in Madison. From 1983 to 1984 he was President of the Indiana Judges Association.

Hensley was interested in science fiction all his life and has been a member of the SF fandom since the 1930s. In 2006 he received the First Fandom Hall of Fame Award . In 1953 he published a first SF short story in the pulp magazine Planet Stories . In total, he wrote around 30 stories and one SF novel, The Black Roads (1976). He worked several times with Harlan Ellison , with whom he had been friends since his army service. In 1981, Final Doors was a collection of Hensley's short stories. As a novelist, he was more prolific in the crime fiction field. He wrote 13 Donald Robak novels and six other crime novels, three of which were also translated into German.
