Joe McNally

Joe McNally (* 1952 in Montclair , New Jersey ) is an American photographer who u. a. has worked for the National Geographic Society since 1987 .

McNally graduated from Syracuse University's SI Newhouse School of Public Communications . He works out of New York City and lives in Ridgefield, Connecticut .

career

From 1994 to 1998, Joe McNally was a permanent photographer for LIFE magazine , the first in 23 years. His most famous series is Faces of Ground Zero - Portraits of the Heroes of September 11th , a collection of 246 giant Polaroid portraits taken at Moby C Studio near Ground Zero within three weeks shortly after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 . A selection of these life-size (9 '× 4') photographs were exhibited in seven US cities in 2002 and viewed by nearly one million people. The exhibition and the book published by LIFE raised approximately $ 2 million for victims of the attacks.

McNally has been with National Geographic Magazine for 20 years . One of the projects for this magazine was The Future of Flying ( The future of flying ), a 32-page cover story in December 2003 for the 100th anniversary of flight, the Wright brothers was published. The article was the first to be entirely digitally photographed for the magazine, the issue was a finalist for the National Magazine Award and one of the most popular front pages.

He has illustrated cover stories for Sports Illustrated , Time , Newsweek , GEO , Fortune , New York , Business Week , LIFE, Men's Journal and others. His advertising contracts include FedEx , Nikon , Sony , Land's End , General Electric , MetLife , Bogen , Adidas , Kelby Media Group , Wildlife Conservation Society, and American Ballet Theater .

He uses Nikon's CLS and Speedlight systems extensively .

Awards

Described by American Photo magazine as perhaps the most versatile contemporary photojournalist, McNally has been featured on the list of the 100 Most Important People in Photography.

In January 1999, Kodak and Photo District News honored McNally by adding it to their Legends Online Archive . In 2001, Nikon made a similar award by adding McNally to NikonNet.com's Legends Behind the Lens list .

McNally has won the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Magazine Photography and honors from Pictures of the Year International , World Press Photo and the Art Directors Club . He has received honors from Photo District News , American Photo , Applied Arts , Communication Arts, and Graphis Inc.
