Johan Jozef Bonny (born July 10, 1955 in Ostend , West Flanders Province , Belgium ) is a Belgian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Antwerp .

Life

Johann Jozef Bonny, the eldest of five children from a Flemish farming family, studied philosophy and theology at the Great Seminary in Bruges (1973; 1976–1979) and at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (1974–1976). On July 20, 1980, he was ordained a priest by the Bishop of Bruges, Emil-Jozef De Smedt, in the parish church of Sint-Niklaaskerk von Moere near Gistel in West Flanders . After a theological Lizentiatisstudium at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , he was ibid 1982 with a dissertation on Jan van Ruusbroec to Dr. theol. PhD. Bonny was initially a professor of church history, ecclesiology, ecumenism and spirituality in the seminary of the diocese of Bruges and archivist of the seminary. He was dean of the theological department (1985–1991) and spiritual director (1991–1997). He was also involved in the Theological Academy of the Diocese of Bruges as well as in youth work and youth ministry. He was a co-founder of the Arche community in Moerkerke. As chairman of the Diocese of Bruges' Ecumenical Commission, he was responsible for the ecumenical "fraternization" between the Diocese of Bruges, the Anglican Diocese of Lincoln (GB) and the Catholic Diocese of Nottingham (GB). He was also a member of the National Commission on Ecumenism and the National Subcommittee on Relations between the Catholic Church and Orthodox Churches. He was a member and deputy moderator of the Council of Priests of the Diocese of Bruges.

In 1997 Johan Bonny was appointed to the Roman Curia and worked in the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity , where he worked closely with Cardinal Walter Kasper . Bonny was responsible for ecumenical relations between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches, mainly in the Middle East. He participated in theological dialogues with the Orthodox Church, with the Eastern Orthodox Churches (including the Coptic, Syrian, Armenian and Malankan Churches) and with the Assyrian Church. He also looked after relations between the council and a number of communities or movements, such as the Communauté de Taizé and the L'Arche community. At the same time, Cardinal Godfried Danneels and the Belgian bishops were appointed rector of the Belgian College in Rome, where priests from all Belgian dioceses study, but also African priests and Greek Orthodox students.

On October 28, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the bishop of Antwerp. He was ordained bishop on January 4, 2009 by the chairman of the Belgian Bishops' Conference and Archbishop of Mechlin-Brussels , Godfried Cardinal Danneels , in the Antwerp Cathedral of Our Lady . Co-consecrators were Cardinal Walter Kasper , President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, his predecessor Paul Van den Berghe and Roger Joseph Vangheluwe , Bishop of Bruges . His motto is Agnus pascet illos (“The lamb will be her shepherd”).

In the Belgian Bishops 'Conference Johan Bonny is a member of the Bishops' Committee “Faith and the Church” and a delegate for the “Catholic National Commission for Ecumenism” and the “Consultation of Christian Churches in Belgium”. On January 21, 2010 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. also a member of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity . He is head of the episcopal commissions for education and religious instruction, for university and college pastoral care, for KU Leuven, for pastoral care in inland navigation and for the Apostleship of the Sea (Apostolatus Maris) as well as for contacts with the Flemish government.

On June 16, 2012, Johan Bonny was invested as a Grand Officer in the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

On January 25, 2020 he will be the main celebrant and preacher of the traditional Charlemagne office.
