Johann Benedict Carpzov III.

Johann Benedict Carpzov III. (* October 25, 1675 in Dresden ; † September 8, 1739 in Wittenberg ) was a historian, lawyer and mayor of Zittau .

Life

Johann Benedict Carpzov's father, Samuel Benedict Carpzov, was a court preacher and senior consistorial councilor in Dresden, while Elector Johann Georg II was his godfather. Johann Benedict attended the Princely School in Meißen , then went to the University of Wittenberg in 1693 and in 1697 to study law at the Brandenburg University of Frankfurt . In 1700 he received his doctorate in law there.

In 1701 he was appointed tax procurator in the Meißnischer Kreis . In 1702 he came to Zittau, where he took over the office of municipal syndic . Carpzov bought the Oberhasenberg estate for 7200 thalers in 1708 , and until 1720 he paid the purchase price in annual installments of 100 thalers. In 1720 he became mayor of Zittau. In 1716 his first significant historical work appeared, the Analecta Fastorum Zittaviensium . In 1718 he published his second major work, New Temple of Honor of Strange Antiques from the Marggrafthum of Ober-Lausitz , for which he received 200 thalers from the state's estates. In 1729 he was deposed by an investigative commission of the Saxon elector together with the entire Zittau council because of irregularities in the administration. After Carpzov lost his mayor's office, he went to Wittenberg as district administrator in 1731 . In 1738 he was designated as the commissioner of the Kurkreis and bailiff of Wittenberg. He died in the latter city in 1739.

Johann Benedict Carpzov was married to Johanna Christina Reinhardt. The marriage had eleven children. The son Friedrich Benedict Carpzov became a lawyer in Wittenberg, the daughter Eleonora Sophia Carpzov married the Zittau lawyer and councilor Johann Friedrich Ettmüller.
