history

The circle came into being when Elector Moritz issued the chancellery rules on August 5, 1547. The highest representative of the circle was a captain, later also known as the district chief. He was responsible for the control of the income and expenditure of all offices subordinate to him, the supervision of the officials and the road system. The area of the Erzgebirge district was only separated from the comparatively large Meißnian district in 1691. In 1815 part of the district had to be ceded to the Kingdom of Prussia. In 1835, the Dresden district directorate took over the legal successor to the Meissen district administration.
