Johann Christian Dolz (born November 6, 1769 in Golßen , Niederlausitz , † January 1, 1843 in Leipzig ) was a German pedagogue and Protestant hymn poet .

Life

Dolz was a student at the Lyceum Lübben . He later studied philosophy, history and theology at the University of Leipzig . One of his academic teachers was the theologian Johann Georg Rosenmüller . From 1793 he taught in Leipzig as a volunteer at the Ratsfreischule . Under the direction of Karl Gottlieb Plato , he was vice director at this school from 1800 to 1833. After Plato's death in 1833, he took over his position.

Dolz wrote numerous, in particular religious and historical didactic, writings. From 1806 to 1824 he published a “youth newspaper” and from 1812 a “paperback for young people”.

In 1841 he was made honorary citizen of Leipzig . In 1894 a monument was erected to him and Plato in Leipzig.

Dolz was a Freemason and in 1833 became an honorary member of the Leipzig Freemason Lodge Minerva to the three palms in Leipzig. He was previously accepted into the Leipzig Lodge Linde , which merged with the Lodge Balduin to form the Lodge Balduin zur Linde in 1809 .

He found his final resting place in the old Johannisfriedhof in the family grave of Plato.
