Johann Christian Hendel
Johann Christian Hendel (born May 7, 1742 in Halle (Saale) ; † October 7, 1823 there ) was a German writer , printer and publisher .
Life
Johann Christian Hendel was born as the son of his father of the same name, Johann Christian Hendel (* 1692; † June 8, 1757 in Halle), bookseller and printer. His father had received his apprenticeship from a printer named Johann Jacob Krebs († 1716) and his widow Gertraud († October 8, 1739), b. Krüger from Rathenow , married in 1717. In 1740 he married a second time. His mother died in 1782 at the age of 76.
He attended the Lutheran city high school in Halle until his father died. Because he accompanied his father to the Leipzig Book Fair at the age of eight , he decided to do an apprenticeship as a printer with Johann Justinus Gebauer in Halle and then worked in the König und Kunst book printing works in Berlin .
After the end of the Seven Years' War he returned to Halle in 1763 and took over his father's book printing company, which had been run by his mother with the help of his stepbrother Johann Philipp Krebs. After his divorce he gave the business back to his mother in the following year and went to Kassel , Marburg and Frankfurt am Main , where he worked for Heinrich Ludwig Brönner (1702–1769) and then to Leipzig, where he worked in Wilhelm's book printing company Gottlob Sommer was active and wrote Arabic and Hebrew works.
In 1768 he returned to Halle again and founded his own publishing house and started a music and sheet music printing company.
After the two municipal grammar schools in Halle were closed, he acquired the school building of the Lutheran grammar school he had previously attended and converted it into a residential building. After the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig, this house was used as a hospital for Russian soldiers and during this time he and two of his daughters took care of the injured soldiers. Because of the illnesses prevailing there, his daughters died within eight days. Because the house was to be demolished, he later sold it for 800 thalers below its value.
In addition to book printing, he was also active in the field of writing, dealing with history and natural history.
When he died he had published 530 works, including various dissertations, and owned a collection of impressions of coats of arms and seals as well as copperplate engravings and maps. He sold a not insignificant mineral cabinet before his death.
Johann Christian Hendel married the daughter of the Leipzig merchant Johann Friedrich Albrecht on October 3, 1763; shortly thereafter, however, the marriage was divorced again.
In 1770 he married the daughter of the bailiff Kästner from Giebichenstein in his second marriage ; together they had six sons and six daughters. Of these, however, when he died, only his son Johann Friedrich Gottlob Hendel, who succeeded his business, and a daughter who was the widow of a preacher, were still alive. His second wife died on July 15, 1795. The publishing house was continued by his grandson Otto Hendel (1820–1898) as Otto-Hendel-Verlag. In 1918 Hermann Hillger from Berlin bought the publishing house, which in 1938 became part of the Hermann Hillger publishing house.
