Johann Christoph von Prignitz (born August 23, 1700 - † November 5, 1757 in the Battle of Roßbach ) was a Prussian colonel and commander of Infantry Regiment No. 5 .

family

Von Prignitz came from the Mecklenburg - Brandenburg noble family von Prignitz . His parents were Johann Albrecht von Prignitz († May 10, 1750) and his wife Barbara Elisabeth von Sehlstrang .

He married Sybille Louise Kinderling on March 6, 1735 in Magdeburg . The couple had three sons and three daughters, two of whom survived their father: Juliane Friederika Louise and Maria Wilhelmine Charlotte († 1798), who married the Prussian district administrator Johann August Wilhelm von Koppy.

Military career

He went into Prussian service on March 1, 1716 and joined the king's regiment. In the body regiment he became an ensign on September 1, 1718, a lieutenant on November 12, 1722 and a first lieutenant on July 2, 1729. This unit then took part in the Rhine campaign of 1734. In this context, Prignitz was promoted to captain on November 19, 1734 and received his own company on December 2, 1734 in Infantry Regiment No. 5 . After returning to the garrison, he married.

In the second Silesian War he fought in the siege of Prague and the battle of Hohenfriedberg . When the army gathered in Cholm he was appointed major on July 25, 1745. After the battle of Kesselsdorf and later peace, the troops came back to Magdeburg . He received the Pour le Mérite on June 14, 1754 and became a lieutenant colonel on June 8, 1755.

At the beginning of the Seven Years' War , Prignitz marched as Quartermaster General of the army of Duke Ferdinand of Braunschweig to Saxony , Leipzig was occupied and the Saxon army was enclosed at Pirna. The regiment then moved to Bohemia via Peterswalde . On October 1, 1756, it stood on the right wing in the Battle of Lobositz . After the victory, the Prussians stayed in Saxony for winter camp. In January 1757 he was given command of the regiment and was promoted to colonel on March 3, 1757. In April 1757 it marched back to Bohemia. After the Austrians were defeated in front of Prague on May 6, 1757, the Prussian army began to siege the city. In this the colonel was shot in the arm. In order to be treated, I first came to Dresden and then to Magdeburg.

In the meantime there was the battle of Kolin, as a result of which the Prussians had to give up the siege of Prague and the French advanced through central Germany towards Magdeburg and Halberstadt. Although still not fully restored, Prignitz went to his regiment in Leipzig and received orders to march against the French. On November 5, 1757, the Prussians met the French near Roßbach . During the battle, the colonel was shot in the abdomen. Badly injured, he was taken to the village of Großkayna , where he died eight hours later. His body was later transferred to Magdeburg and buried in the St. Petri Church .
