Johann Daniel Gohl ( pseudonyms : Caspar Melchior Blazer, Ursinus Wahrmund and Aletophilus ; * July 26, 1674 in Berlin ; † April 2, 1731 in Wriezen ) was a German physician , practicing doctor in Berlin and Halle , well doctor in Freienwalde and physicist in Oberbarnimschen Circle . Together with Johann Christian Kundmann, Gohl is one of the pioneers of medical statistics in Germany.

Live and act

Johann Daniel Gohl was the son of the Brandenburg chamber musician Johann Gool († 1690). After attending the grammar schools in Berlin and Halle, Gohl studied languages and law in Halle . After an illness he studied medicine there from 1696 and was a student of Georg Ernst Stahl and Friedrich Hoffmann . Gohl received his doctorate in 1698 and then worked as a general practitioner in Berlin for about a year. After his marriage he moved to Halle as a general practitioner in 1699, where he also gave lectures. There, however, he must have had a dispute with his colleagues and moved back to Berlin. In 1711 Gohl received supervision of the Gesundbrunnen in Freienwalde as a so-called well doctor and stayed there during the summer months. In the same year he was appointed a member of the Royal Prussian Society of Sciences in Berlin . In 1721 he was appointed physicist of the Oberbarnim district with an official seat in Wriezen . On March 20, 1723, with the academic surname Aeschryon, he was accepted into the Leopoldina ( matriculation number 364 ).

In older writings and biographies, Gohl is considered a supporter of Stahl, to whom his biographer Stürzbecher, however, pays no further attention. Gohl received special attention through the publication of the first Berlin medical journal Acta medicorum Berolinensium from 1717 to 1731. In the first issue of these, Gohl published a Historia morborum Berolinensium for 1716. Two years later, a table was added about the sick and deceased soldiers of the Berlin garrison. From 1721 he published tables on Berlin deaths in the previous year, separated according to cause of death and months and provided with comments. Kundmann, who had published such tables for Breslau in Johann Kanold's collection of nature and medicine as well as related art and literature stories , linked and compared the Berlin and Breslau figures that Johann Peter Süßmilch for his pioneering work Die Divine order in the changes of the human sex, from birth, death and procreation of the same has been shown to be used.

Gohl was married to Eva Victoria Eisener and had two sons and two daughters with her, of which we should mention: Daniel August, bookseller in Berlin, and Eleonore Catherine, married to Philipp Jacob Manitius (1692–1749), war councilor and later mayor of Koenigsberg .
