Johann Eberhard Ernst Herwarth von Bittenfeld (born December 17, 1753 in Wesel , † January 27, 1833 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Johann Eberhard Ernst came from the old Swabian noble family Herwarth von Bittenfeld (also called Herwart or Hörwarth von Bittenfeld ), who belonged to the oldest city noble families in the free imperial city of Augsburg who were eligible for regiment . He was the son of Johann Friedrich Herwarth von Bittenfeld (1696–1757) and his wife Johanna Elisabeth, née Harpprecht von Harpprechtstein (1753–1781).

Military career

He also chose a military career and received his military training in the cadet corps . From 1773 ensign he became an officer in the regiment "von Schwerin", the later regiment "Duke of Braunschweig on foot" in Halberstadt . Herwarth von Bittenfeld took part in the campaigns against revolutionary France in 1793/94, was in the battles of Pirmasens and Kaiserslautern , then became major and in 1805 commander of the "von Renouard" infantry regiment in Halle . In the battle of Auerstedt in 1806 he was seriously wounded and taken prisoner by the French.

As a private person he lived in Halle until 1809, later in Brandenburg, where he was appointed head of one of the honorary tribunals established at that time. In April 1809 he was recalled to active service by a royal cabinet order and appointed commander of the 1st Silesian Infantry Regiment in Neisse . Soon afterwards he was promoted to lieutenant colonel , in spring 1811 he became a colonel and brigadier of the garrison troops in Pomerania and Brandenburg. After the war against France broke out again, he was appointed inspector of the garrison and reserve battalions between the Oder and the Vistula . On June 12, 1814, he was promoted to major general, when he retired on October 12, 1815, he was awarded the Iron Cross with a white ribbon.

Herwarth von Bittenfeld was a member of the military society .

family

Herwarth von Bittenfeld married Johanna Friederike Auguste von Arnstedt (1765–1851), a daughter of the Privy Councilor Karl Adrian von Arnstädt (1716–1800) on Groß-Werther and Christiane Luise Antoinette von Lüdecke (1734–1779). From this marriage there were four sons who also made careers in the military:

A great-great-grandson, Hans Herwarth von Bittenfeld, was one of the conspirators of the failed coup on July 20, 1944 .
