Hans Paulus Herwarth von Bittenfeld (born January 12, 1800 in Halberstadt , † May 20, 1881 in Berlin ) was a Prussian officer , most recently a general of the infantry and governor of Magdeburg .

Hans Paulus came from the old Augsburg city ​​noble family Herwarth von Bittenfeld , which was first mentioned in 1246. He was the son of the Prussian major general Johann Eberhard Ernst Herwarth von Bittenfeld (1753-1833) and his wife Johanna Friedericke Auguste, born von Arnstedt (1765-1851).

Military career

Herwarth von Bittenfeld joined the 2nd Guards Regiment on March 28, 1815 as a grenadier on foot , with which he took part in the march on Paris. On October 15, 1828 he was promoted to Premier Lieutenant , on April 14, 1834 to captain and on March 22, 1843 to major . On July 1, 1860, he rose to lieutenant general and became inspector of the garrisons of Mainz and Rastatt . In the further course of his military career he was appointed governor of Magdeburg on October 17, 1864 , and on September 20, 1866, he achieved the rank of general of the infantry.
