Friedrich Adrian Herwarth von Bittenfeld (born April 13, 1802 in Halberstadt , † January 13, 1884 in Merseburg ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Friedrich came from the old Augsburg city ​​noble family Herwarth von Bittenfeld , which was first mentioned in 1246. He was the son of the Prussian major general Johann Eberhard Ernst Herwarth von Bittenfeld (1753-1833) and his wife Johanna Friedericke Auguste von Arnstedt (1765-1851).

Two of his brothers also rose to become generals in the Prussian Army : Eberhard Herwarth von Bittenfeld (1796–1884) and Hans Paulus Herwarth von Bittenfeld (1800–1881).

Military career

Herwarth von Bittenfeld joined the 2nd Guard Regiment on foot on April 22, 1819 after visiting the University of Berlin . There he was promoted to second lieutenant on October 20, 1819 . From August 1, 1825 to June 30, 1828 he was sent to the General War School for further training . Half a year later he became an adjutant of the 1st Battalion. On April 8, 1832, Herwarth von Bittenfeld joined the 2nd Guard Infantry Brigade as an adjutant. In the further course of his military career he became a colonel on May 10, 1855, commander of the 2nd Guards Regiment on foot. At the same time, Herwarth von Bittenfeld was also a member of the military management of the Central Gymnasium from June 14, 1855. On November 12, 1857 he was appointed commander of the 14th Infantry Brigade. After becoming major general on May 22, 1858 , he was appointed commander of the 3rd Guard Infantry Brigade after one year. With his promotion to Lieutenant General on October 18, 1861, Herwarth von Bittenfeld was transferred to the officers of the army. He was not used again until he was appointed commander of the 4th Division on April 3, 1862. He then led the division in 1866 during the German War in the battle of Gitschin and Königgrätz .

After the end of the war, Herwarth von Bittenfeld was entrusted with the management of the General Command of the Second Army Corps on August 23, 1866 . Shortly afterwards, on September 17, 1866, he was returned to the army officers.

On April 9, 1867 he was appointed governor of Koenigsberg . As such, Herwarth von Bittenfeld received the character of General of the Infantry on March 22, 1868 . On the occasion of the celebration of his 50th anniversary of service on April 22, 1869, he was awarded the Order of the Crown, 1st Class, with the enamel ribbon of the Order of the Red Eagle with oak leaves and swords on the ring.

Shortly before the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War , Herwarth von Bittenfeld was put up for disposition on July 9, 1870 with a pension under the Grand Commander of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern .

He married on December 16, 1841 in Naumburg (Saale) Freda von Krosigk (born September 26, 1815 in Poplitz , † January 2, 1886 in Porstendorf), a daughter of Dedo von Krosigk . The marriage had two children:
