Johann Elias Werner (born May 16, 1751 in Vollersroda ; † June 23, 1835 in Barth ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman.

Life

Johann Elias Werner came from farming conditions in Thuringia . He attended grammar school in Weimar from 1762 to 1772 and studied theology in Jena with Professor Johann Franz Buddeus , who came from Anklam . Probably through his mediation, he then went to Pomerania as a tutor in noble families.

In 1783 Werner became a preacher in the Blixen regiment in Stralsund . In 1784 he married in Lassan Anna Friederica Dorothea Schulz (born August 18, 1768), daughter of the Lassan deacon Johann Nikolaus Schulz (1738-1812) and his wife Catharina Dorothea Schwarz (1743-1803).

After the outbreak of the Russo-Swedish War , Werner came to Sweden with his regiment in September 1788. On May 15, 1790, he took part in the victorious battle of the archipelago at Fredrikshamn . On July 3, he also took part in the sea ​​battle near Vyborg on the Dalarna galley and was captured by Russia with the crew. After the peace treaty he was released and returned to Stralsund on October 23, 1791.

In 1795 Werner was awarded the preposition in Barth by the Swedish king as the successor to Jakob Metzger (1723–1794) . During the 40 years of his activity there he initiated a. a. the internal expansion of the Marienkirche by Johann Gottfried Quistorp and Gottlieb Giese . In addition, he devoted himself to looking after the children of the educational institution for the poor . His particular merit is the establishment of a preacher's widow support society for New Western Pomerania .

On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Reformation, the theological faculty of the University of Greifswald awarded Johann Elias Werner an honorary doctorate in 1817. In 1833 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle .

His son Friedrich August Werner became a pastor in Tribsees , the birthplace of Johann Elias' father-in-law.
