Johann Friedrich Mieg (theologian)

Johann Friedrich Mieg (also Johannes Friedrich Mieg the Elder or Joannes Fridericus Mieg ; born August 12, 1642 in Strasbourg , † August 12, 1691 in Groningen ) was a German Reformed theologian and university professor .

Life

Mieg came from a wide area, which originally from Strasbourg family Mieg . He was the son of the Chancellor of the Electoral Palatinate, Johann Ludwig Mieg. Mieg was enrolled in the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg in October 1654 , changed to its Theological Faculty in 1655, before he came to the University of Marburg in December 1658 and to the University of Basel in April 1659 . As early as 1657 he appeared with his first dissertation De natura et usu primae philosophiae, in 1660 with De raptu Eliae ex 2nd Reg. II . In 1660 he received his master's degree in philosophy . At this time he was in the favor of Johann Buxtorf the Younger . For further studies he came to St Catharine's College at the University of Cambridge . From there he came to Leyden University in 1663/1664 . At the Basel University he was on April 12, 1667 with the dissertation De spiritu servitutis. Rom. 8, 15 to Dr. theol. PhD .

In 1667 Mieg accepted a call as professor of philosophy and consistorial councilor at the University of Heidelberg, in 1672 he moved to the theological faculty as professor of theology. At both faculties he held the office of dean several times , as well as the office of rector of the university in 1676 and 1684 , and in 1686 he acted as president of the university anniversary. In 1687 he was appointed to the church council. Around 1689 he was taken hostage by the French to Strasbourg. It was only possible to buy it out about a year later with the help of the Swiss. Despite the efforts of the University of Heidelberg, he accepted a position at the University of Groningen in 1691 . There he held his inaugural lecture De spiritu ecclesiae christianae harmonico on June 15, 1691 . Shortly afterwards he died unexpectedly.

The theologian Ludwig Christian Mieg was his son and the theologian Hermann Reinhold Pauli his son-in-law. The director of the Electoral Palatinate Marriage Court Johann Friedrich Mieg , the church councilor Ludwig Georg Mieg and the theology professor Johann Kasimir Mieg were his grandchildren.
