Johann Georg Albini the Elder , also Albinus (born March 6, jul. / 16th March  1624 greg. In Nessa in Weissenfels , † May 25 jul. / 4. June  1679 greg. In Naumburg (Saale) ) was a German writer and Protestant theologian of the baroque period .

Life

Albini was the son of the pastor Zacharias Albinus (Latinized from Weisse ) and great-grandson Zacharias Selnecker . When Albini was eleven years old, his father died. In 1638 Albini came to live with his cousin Lucas Pollio, a deacon at St. Nicholas in Leipzig . Albini's mother died in 1642, her cousin a year later; the nineteen year old was on his own. The court preacher Sebastian Mitternacht took on Albinis in Naumburg; Despite the blows of fate, Albini did not lose heart:

As a poor fellow I tried day and night to learn something honest and thorough, because I could rely on nothing but God and good people who helped me everywhere.

In 1645 he matriculated to study theology in Jena , which he later continued in Leipzig. In addition to his studies, he devoted himself to poetry and worked as a tutor for the children of his brother-in-law, Mayor Kühlwein. After a few intermediate stops he was appointed rector of the Naumburg Cathedral School in 1653 . In 1657 he became chief pastor of the Naumburg Church of St. Othmar and remained so until his death in 1679. The Latin inscription that his sons had engraved on his tombstone reads:

Cum viveret, moriebatur, et nunc cum mortuus vivit, quia sciebat, quod vita via sit mortis et mors vitae introitus.

One of his sons is the baroque poet of the same name, Johann Georg Albini the Younger .

Albini wrote numerous sacred poems and verse transcriptions from Dutch and Latin. Following the example of the Latin poetry of the Jesuits and the Pegnitzschäfer influenced by it and the Italian literature of the time, he wanted to overcome Martin Opitz's style, which he felt was too dry . In your anger , punishment me in particular was not known of his hymns . Overall, his work was shaped by the harrowing experiences of the Thirty Years' War .

Albini joined the German-minded cooperative of Philipp von Zesen as Der Blühende . Johann Sebastian Bach used stanzas by Albini in the cantatas Who knows how close my end is to me? (BWV 27) and Der Friede sei mit dir (BWV 158), Klaus Huber set Albini's stanzas to music in 1957 as the angel's address to the soul , a twelve-tone composition .

Poem example

An example of Albini's poetry style:

Do not punish me in your anger (first two stanzas)

Do not punish me in your anger,
Great God, spare;
Oh don't let me be lost,
not worth it for merit.
When sin kindles you,
for Christ's sake let
your anger be quieted .

Lord: who thinks yours in death,
who gives thanks in hell?
Save me from the torment of
the damned souls,
That I praise you for and for
there on that day,
Most High God.
