Johann Grill
Johann Grill , named after his farm, the Kederbach fief in Ramsau near Berchtesgaden , the Kederbacher (born October 22, 1835 in Ramsau; † January 14, 1917 ), was the first to climb the Watzmann east face and the first official German mountain guide .
family
The fief is located in the street of the same name, the Kederbachstraße. The meager conditions forced the extra work as a woodcutter and drivers in the yard hunts of Bavarian royalty and finally as a mountain guide. Johann Grill was married; his wife looked after the home farm during his mountain tours. He had three sons, also mountain climbers. The best known and most successful among them was Johann Grill junior. (* July 12, 1862; † December 3, 1929 in Ramsau).
Alpinistic achievements
Together with Otto Schück from Vienna , he was the first to climb the Watzmann East Face in 14 hours in 1881 . Today the route is named Kederbacher-Weg in his honor . In 1890 the east face claimed the first fatality, the Munich Christian Schöllhorn, after whom the Schöllhorn ice field in the east face is named. Schöllhorn fell into the rift, Johann Grill recovered it from a depth of around 60 meters. Before that, in 1868 he managed to cross the 3 Watzmann peaks for the first time, together with Johann Punz and the Austrian Albert Kaindl. But he was also active outside of his Berchtesgaden home. He also led his guests to their summit successes in the distant western Alps . So he succeeded z. B. with John Percy Farrar the second ascent of the Weisshorn west face in the Valais Alps . With Josef Pöschl, Kederbacher was the first (tourist) to climb the Großer Ödstein in Gesäuse (June 12, 1877 ). Johann Grill stood on a 4000 meter more than 50 times. Even at the age of 57, he climbed the east face of the Watzmann twice within two weeks.

The statue is now in front of the guest house at the entrance to Ramsau. The wooden sculpture created in his honor by the artist Angerer the Younger can be viewed in the House of Nature in Berchtesgaden. The original is in the Messner Mountain Museum in Bolzano.
