The Kleine Palfelhorn (also Palfenhorn, Balfenhorn, Palvenhorn ) is a 2073 m high peak in the Berchtesgaden Alps .
location
The Kleine Palfelhorn, like the Große Palfelhorn ( 2222 m , south, collectively called Palfelhorn ), is located at the end of the Berchtesgadener Wimbach valley .
The Hochkalter rises to the north, the Watzmann to the northeast , the Große Hundstod to the southeast , and the Hocheisspitze to the northwest .
The Palfelhörner form a small subgroup with the south-facing Seehorn ( 2321 m ) in the Weißbachtal near Lofer. On the Bavarian side, this is included in the southern Wimbach chain of the Hochkaltergebirge , and on the Austrian side usually in the Steinerne Meer .
The name stands for Palfen 'rock'. The brittle Ramsaudolomit gives the summit its appearance.
Approaches
The Kleine Palfelhorn upstream of Wimbachgries is reserved for climbers and is rarely visited due to its extreme fragility. The path of the first climbers Franz von Schilcher , Johann Punz and J. Schöttl (1885) is no longer accessible after a landslide. At the time, it was considered the most difficult ascent in the Berchtesgaden Alps, along with the east face of the Watzmann . The current normal route is the descent of the first climber and requires climbing in the second degree of difficulty . Georg Weiß (1877–1937), the great Berchtesgaden ski pioneer, climbed the Kleine Palfelhorn more than 80 times.
