Johann Heinrich Richter (* 1803 in Koblenz , † 1845 in Koblenz) was a German portrait , history and genre painter .

Life

Before 1822, Richter trained as a goldsmith in his father's workshop in Koblenz. Between 1822 and 1827 he was a student in the studio of Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson in Paris , from the beginning of 1825 with François Gérard , then he returned to Koblenz. Around 1830 he traveled to the Netherlands and again to Paris, from 1830–1833 he stayed in Munich . There he made historical cardboard boxes at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and worked successfully as a society portraitist. Between 1832 and 1834 a judge was in Naples, Florence and Rome, possibly in the vicinity of Horace Vernet and Léopold Robert . From 1836 in Koblenz, mainly working as a portrait painter, he was employed as a portrait painter in Holland (The Hague, Middelburg) from 1840–1844.

Stay in Paris 1822–1827

At the age of 19, Richter went to Paris. Immediately after his arrival he entered the Louvre's register of copiers . His address: Rue de la Grande Truanderie 41. He first attended a Parisian craft school. From here, Richter came to Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson's studio . His early artistic inclination and the "many masterpieces" that he could see in the studio were the reason for him to devote himself to painting. Richter's talent and rapid progress did not go unnoticed and caught the attention of Girodet-Trioson . Richer devoted himself entirely to his studies for two years.

Not much is known about the works created in Paris. Becker wrote that a self-portrait from 1825 was by Richter. Richter is said to have painted this self-portrait after Girodet's death on December 9, 1824. Richter continued his studies with François Gérard until 1827 . On July 6, 1827, Alexander von Humboldt wrote a letter to François Gérard, in which he thanked Richter for welcoming Richter to the master's studio. In this letter von Humboldt mentions a painting of Saint Sebastian that Richter painted. He created it based on the work of the same name by Perugino . The painting was later acquired for the St. Kastor Church in Koblenz. However, other sources report that Richter only finished the work after his return to Koblenz. He completed another painting from Richter's student days in the Louvre in Rome in early 1830. It is said to be a copy of the Pope's portrait of Pius XII. act by Jacques Louis David (TB).
