Louis Léopold Robert
Louis Léopold Robert , (born May 13, 1794 in Les Eplatures (today La Chaux-de-Fonds ), Canton of Neuchâtel , † March 20, 1835 in Venice ) was a Swiss painter .
Life
Robert studied in Paris with the engraver Edouard Girardet and the painter Jacques-Louis David . With their support, he went to Rome in 1818 and mostly dealt with genre painting . His sketches and studies from everyday life formed the basis of his paintings. His depictions from the life of robbers also became known.
In 1822 Robert stayed in Naples for a long time, and it was there that he found the inspiration for one of his most important pictures, The Improvisator . This was created the following year, also after some preliminary work. In 1831 Robert stayed in Paris for a few months, then in 1832 he settled in Venice . According to the judgment of contemporaries, Robert suffered from attacks of melancholy from this time on .
When he extremely unhappy in the Princess Charlotte Bonaparte fell, he committed on March 20, 1835 in Venice suicide .
reception
Public and art critics alike praised his genre paintings from Italian folk life very much. However, Robert only showed everyday life in a sensitive idealization.
Honors
In his honor, the most important main street in La Chaux-de-Fonds is called Avenue Léopold Robert .
