Johann Lewalter
Johann Lewalter (born January 24, 1862 in Kassel ; † September 30, 1935 there ) was a German teacher, composer, folklorist and local writer.
Life
Johann Lewalter was the son of a book printer and first learned the printing trade. He later studied music at the Leipzig Conservatory and became a music teacher in Kassel. The publication of the approx. 230 folk and children's songs that he has collected in northern Hesse , especially in Rengershausen , Harleshausen and Kirchditmold , is significant . Lewalter also collected and recorded the Schwalm dances performed on festive occasions .
He also promoted tourism in the area around Helsa . For this he was made an honorary citizen of Helsa in 1928. In memory of him, the Lewalterbrunnen between Eschenstruth and Helsa was named after him in 1938 . The Lewalterweg in the Helsa district also reminds of him.
