Johann Michael Funcke (born  December 9, 1678 in Erfurt ; †  July 15, 1749 there ) was a German printer and publisher .

Life

Johann Michael Funcke, son of the innkeeper of the same name and his wife Christina Constantia, had learned the profession of printer like the five years older half-brother Johann Christoph Stössel. After his apprenticeship with Conrad Stössel in Chemnitz and experiences from Leipzig and Dresden (1699–1705) Funcke returned to Erfurt. The heirs of the printing and bookstore of his half-brother Johann Christoph Stössel, who died in 1709, entrusted Funcke with the continuation of the business. In the beginning, Funcke often printed for the publishers of Stössel's heirs, Hieronymus Philipp Ritschel and Johann Jacob Spiess, without specifying the printer. However, he soon developed his own ambitions for publishing and bookselling activities and published important works such as Elephantographia Curiosa by Georg Christoph Petri von Hartenfels and Botanica in Originali by Johann Hieronymus Kniphof . Funcke and Kniphof developed self-printing into a scientifically and commercially applicable process. Funcke's authors also included Christoph von Hellwig alias Valentin Kreutermann, Johann Gottfried Gregorii alias Melissantes, Sidonia Hedwig Zigarunemann , Andreas Elias Büchner alias Biantes, Johann Jacob Martini and Christian Franz Paullini . Occasionally he cooperated with the engraver Jacob Petrus. His pamphlets are often illustrated with woodcuts. In addition to scientific books, calendars, doctoral publications and funeral sermons, the range also included magazines such as the Remarquablen Curiosa .
