Johann Nepomuk von Harscher

Johann Nepomuk von Harscher (born December 17, 1769 in Landshut , † October 30, 1834 in Regensburg ) was a royal Bavarian officer, most recently in the rank of major general , and commander of Lindau and Wülzburg . Since 1807 he was a knight of the Military Max Joseph Order .

Life

Harscher was the son of the electoral Bavarian government councilor to Landshut Franz Xaver von Harscher auf Paindlkofen and Babing and his wife Maria Mechtildis, a née Farmbacher.

After graduating from high school, Harscher joined the cuirassier regiment "Graf Ysenburg" on May 2, 1785 as a cadet , in which he was appointed standard leader on April 1, 1790. It was not until five years later, on July 29, 1795, that he was promoted to lieutenant , on March 8, 1798 to lieutenant, and on June 22, 1800, he was appointed captain . As such, he took part in the campaign against Austria in 1805 with his unit, which was called 1st Dragoons Regiment "Graf Minucci" since March 11, 1804 . During the pursuit of the enemy on October 12, 1805, he fell from his horse and contracted a hernia .

In the following campaign against Prussia from 1806 to 1807 Harscher had several opportunities to distinguish himself. Promoted to major in the 3rd Chevaulegers Regiment on August 15, 1806 , he took part in the siege of Glogau . During the fighting for Breslau on November 15, 1806, he led the vanguard and was able to bring in 36 prisoners and 39 horses on a foray with 80 men. During an outpost battle near Weißenrode on January 2, 1807, Harscher commanded the barrier guard and was able to repel the Prussian attacks with fierce resistance. In the army order of January 18, 1807, Harscher was mentioned with praise. He received the French Legion of Honor with a Brevet from March 5 and in an army order from March 31, 1807 .

In the campaign against Austria in 1809 he fell from his horse again on April 24th during the battle near Neumarkt an der Rott , and his injury from 1805 worsened considerably. On April 29, 1809 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the 3rd Chevaulegers Regiment and was appointed colonel of this unit on October 27 of the same year . In the spring of 1812 he moved out with his regiment from Ulm to campaign against Russia . On the march, Harscher had to report to Scheßlitz as a result of his injuries sustained in 1805 and 1809, unfit for service and surrender the regimental command.

On April 15, 1812, Harscher was appointed commander of the town and fortress of Lindau, and on December 17, 1816, he was transferred to Wülzburg as a commander. After Harscher retired on 1 January 1823, he was still of the February 12, 1823 Character awarded as a major general.

Johann Nepomuk von Harscher died on October 30, 1834 at the age of 64 in Regensburg.
